Whananaki School have been partcipating in the Experiencing Marine Reserves (EMR) programme during term 1, and recently experienced the magical Poor Knights Islands.

Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust trustee Vince Kerr has recently completed the first stage of a web site project called:
'How to Create a Marine Reserve Proposal'.
Marine kaitiaki guardians from the Far North to Otago are rewarded with Poor Knights snorkel experience.
The Mountains to Sea convervation trust explored citizen science, with 58 participants held at Omaha Marae in Leigh.

EMR coordinator see first-hand, the benefits of the EMR programme. The feedback is amazing but the most
rewarding part is seeing the looks on the faces of the students, whanau and even the teachers as they emerge from their marine reserve experiences. A real buzz is created, even though they are sometimes shivering, they can’t stop speaking about what they saw…this is Education for Sustainability in action!!

The annual EMR competition trip is organised by Experiencing Marine Reserves (EMR) and is made up of representative students from each school that that participates in the programme from Northland and Auckland, as well as representatives from eight regions where EMR is operating including Taranaki, Coromandel, Gisborne, Wellington,
Nelson and Otago.

Saturday the 27th February marks the beginning of Seaweek 2016 with 25 events in Northland listed on the Seaweek website at seaweek.org.nz/events/northland, plus 14 competitions nationally. So dive into Seaweek, visit the website and check out the events near you!
Kia ora - EMR is searching for new volunteers for the following role:
Water based snorkel guides - Volunteer guides will each take a small group of the public (maximum 6), assisting them to snorkel and identify the fish they see. The groups will keep close to the shore on the whole and sessions will last about 20 minutes. Volunteer guides will do 2 - 3 sessions then take a break. A kayak or vessel may support the groups and a full briefing will be held before the event. You will need to be an experienced snorkeler i.e. comfortable in the marine environment and have the ability to look after the group, plus a basic knowledge of what you're likely to see in the way of fish and other marine life. Able to follow instructions, fit and healthy and free from the influence of drugs or alcohol.
