EMR coordinator see first-hand, the benefits of the EMR programme. The feedback is amazing but the most
rewarding part is seeing the looks on the faces of the students, whanau and even the teachers as they emerge from their marine reserve experiences. A real buzz is created, even though they are sometimes shivering, they can’t stop speaking about what they saw…this is Education for Sustainability in action!!

The annual EMR competition trip is organised by Experiencing Marine Reserves (EMR) and is made up of representative students from each school that that participates in the programme from Northland and Auckland, as well as representatives from eight regions where EMR is operating including Taranaki, Coromandel, Gisborne, Wellington,
Nelson and Otago.

Kia ora - EMR is searching for new volunteers for the following role:
Water based snorkel guides - Volunteer guides will each take a small group of the public (maximum 6), assisting them to snorkel and identify the fish they see. The groups will keep close to the shore on the whole and sessions will last about 20 minutes. Volunteer guides will do 2 - 3 sessions then take a break. A kayak or vessel may support the groups and a full briefing will be held before the event. You will need to be an experienced snorkeler i.e. comfortable in the marine environment and have the ability to look after the group, plus a basic knowledge of what you're likely to see in the way of fish and other marine life. Able to follow instructions, fit and healthy and free from the influence of drugs or alcohol.
