Pitch Black play in largest Sea Cave in the World!

pitch blackBack in 2003, during Seaweek, an awesome event occurred. It began with a powhiri, then the Dive Tutukaka boat ‘Calypso’ was boarded by a diverse group of Northlanders and special guests including the Conservation Minister at the time, Chris Carter, and Don Robertson from Blake Expeditions (a total of 45 people).

The ‘Calypso’ took all the guests out to the Poor Knights, where they enjoyed musical entertainment by Pitch Black in Rikoriko Cave (the biggest sea cave in the WORLD).

EMR director and event organiser, Samara Nicholas, said that “the musical performance in the cave was absolutely mind-blowing, a truly unique situation.”

Many other charter boats joined in to enjoy the performance in the cave. “While the music was playing, people started jumping into the water to snorkel and swim closer to Pitch Black, which were performing from another boat”.

After the musical experience, most of the people aboard the ‘Calypso’ snorkelled among the abundant marine life at the Poor Knights Islands Marine Reserve, described by the Minister as “one of the most special places on the planet”.

The day was rounded off back on land, with speeches from the Minister, Wade Doak, Don Robertson and event supporters, including the Whale and Dolphin Adoption Project, Department of Conservation and Northland Regional Council.
