Ever wondered what a protected marine environment looks like? Ever wondered what life exists just below the surface of the waves? Ever wondered why we all seem to love diving down on the South Coast so much?
Well wonder no more! It’s that time of year again when we here at Mountains to Sea Wellington would like to exuberantly invite you to come jump in the water with us for one of our annual free Taputeranga Community Snorkels.
Our absolutely stellar snorkel guides will be on hand to guide you in your underwater adventures, getting you kitted out, answering any fishy questions you might have and generally looking after you whilst you take the plunge into the blue. This is an awesome opportunity to learn more about the fascinating array of organisms that seek shelter within the reserve's protected boundaries right on our doorstep.
This year we will also have local ocean experts joining us on dry land to share their knowledge on seaweed, sponges and many other amazing creatures found along our coastline.
New snorkelers are of course encouraged, we love being able to facilitate peoples first snorkelling experiences (but you must be able to swim). Don’t worry about equipment, we provide wetsuits, snorkels, flippers and masks. If you do have your own gear though, you are more than welcome to bring it along.
Please note the minimum age for participation is 8 years old, and children below 16 must be accompanied by a snorkelling adult.
There’s no need to book, just turn up and register for the next available snorkel tour. If you click attending on this Facebook event, you’ll receive important information and updates, including a confirmation of the location on the day (if the swell is up at Princess Bay, we may move the event round the coast a little way to the more sheltered Island Bay).
If the weather isn’t great on the day, the event will potentially be postponed to the 7th of February.
What to bring: Togs, towel, sunhat, camera, warm clothes and hopefully a sense of adventure.
We can’t wait to see you there!
This event is brought to you by Friends of Taputeranga Marine Reserve and Mountains to Sea Wellington, with thanks to funding from the Wellington Community Trust which helps ensure this is a free event for all!
If you are a keen and experienced snorkeler and would like to help the Mountains to Sea Wellington team with this community event and/or helping out with our school programmes, please contact
